Grants are made by Solicitation Only.

Kawari Fund Grants are:
  • Nimble, flexible, and neutral as to final decisions made by the relevant stakeholders and beneficiaries with respect to forest carbon market involvement
  • Primarily focused on JREDD+ initiatives, and less on private carbon projects
  • Intended to advance the following objectives:
    • Enhancing the enabling environment for rights-based governance of partners by supporting a favorable policy and legal framework in jurisdictional REDD+ programs.
    • Strengthening capacities, skills and voice of partners to engage in jurisdictional REDD+ programs and benefit from them.
    • Strengthening opportunities for engagement of partners by supporting their participation, collaboration and partnerships with other key stakeholders, and ensuring that they lead and benefit from jurisdictional REDD+ programs.
    • Integrating safeguard requirements, systems and processes in the design and implementation of jurisdictional REDD+ programs.

Is your jurisdiction eligible?

Kawari's grants are awarded throughout the globe, but predominantly focused on tropical forest regions in jurisdictions where a minimum level of progress on JREDD+ has been made — defined as jurisdictions where national or subnational governments have signed Letters of Interest, Memoranda of Understanding, Memoranda of Agreement, or Emissions Reduction Purchase Agreements with the LEAF Coalition or another carbon finance provider. Solicitations relating to other jurisdictions are done on a case-by-case basis.

Award Details

  • Made throughout the year on a rolling basis, budgeting permitted
  • Provided to Indigenous Peoples, Local Communities and their organizations, NGO allies, and Governments aiming to ensure high social integrity in forest carbon markets, especially JREDD+
  • Range typically from $4000 to $300,000 depending on the nature, length and scope of the grant.
  • Based on Grant proposal and Budget Templates provided when a grant is solicited by Kawari

Quick Action Grants

Kawari has a Quick Action Grant process allowing it to rapidly award small urgent grants of no more than $35K for strategic, time-sensitive activities that will begin and end within 90 days.

Urgent needs means:

(i)An unforeseen event or circumstances that IPs and LCs must address immediately in order to avoid irreparable harms and/or seize time sensitive opportunities (i.e., government policy or activity affecting IP and LC rights will be adopted or commenced imminently, a window of opportunity or public comment period has just opened and will soon close).

(ii)Actions that cannot be addressed through Kawari's regular grant process.

(iii)Actions that still address one or more of the four (4) objectives listed above.
